About Boston Bar First Nation

A proud Nlaka'pamux Nation honouring tradition, resilience and unity while building a strong future

Nlaka'pamux: Boston Bar First Nation (Tqʷiyáwm, also recorded as Quayome, meaning ‘To Pick Berries’) is part of the Nlaka'pamux people. The Nation has no treaty and is governed under the Indian Act, and British Columbia works with it outside the B.C. treaty process. In 2003 the Nation joined the Nlaka'pamux Nation's lawsuit claiming Aboriginal title. We are members of the Nlaka'pamux Nation Tribal Council and the Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly.

Population: Our community had 273 registered members as of July 2016, with strong ties to our reserves and territory in the Fraser River watersheds.

Location: Our 12 reserves cover 556.10 hectares in the Fraser River watersheds. Hope is 67 km away by road, and Vancouver is 216 km away, about 2 hours 45 minutes. Our band was formed from the amalgamation of Chomok and Speyum (1897) and Kopchitchin (1900).

Culture: We carry forward salmon fishing and our language, Nłeʔkepmxcín, with ongoing efforts to revive it. Tuckkwiowhum Village, our heritage site, includes a smokehouse, food caches, a sweat lodge, earth ovens and a pit house. We pursue greater economic opportunities and sustainable land practices, including forestry agreements.
